And so it begins:  a book club for yoga fans, practitioners, teachers and explorers.  It has been suggested that perhaps the best place to start is with the Yoga Sutras.  A challenge for sure, but a great way to share our passion.  Look here for an update on this and feel free to comment if you are interested.  We are looking for any input into how best to conduct an "on-line" book club.

Some thoughts:

1.) Different people take on the task of "leading" the discussion of our books.  One month someone is the main blogger, another month another blogger and so on.  That way the wealth is spread evenly.

2.) Discussion could take place in the form of comments.  How is the book affecting you? Are you using it in your practice?  Do you use it when teaching?  What did you learn that is new?  What is not great about it? What would you recommend/not recommend about it?  and so on

3.) If a book is really gripping us we can focus on it for longer.  Perhaps to start a month/ book.

Let me know your thoughts!  Excited to have this journey with you all... Happy Reading and Namaste!

  1. I am reading Ashtanga Yoga: Practice and Philosophy by Gregor Maehle. It contains what I think is an excellent running commentary, verse-by-verse, of the Yoga Sutra. The book presents as a user's manual for Ashtange and this is a sort of a hidden treasure.

Available on Amazon, but I can't past in this box.

  2. There are two yoga teachers blogging weekly on the Sutras: Kate (http://dharmayoga.wordpress.com/)
& Jenni (http://yoganu.blogspot.com/)... they'd be outstanding resources for such a discussion!

  3. I'd love to join, but probably won't be able to contribute much until August 1st. Not much time until after the move. Looking forward to reading the discussions.

  5. Thsnks for fixing this for us less computer savvy yogis! Since there are so many other sites discussing the Sutras, I think it would be good to discuss a book that deals with a different topic. That's why I vote for the Desikachar book. But there are so many other great books out there. Will send you a list of suggestions at another time, when I'm not supposed to be working. LOL! One quick suggestion is Chitra Divakaruni's latest, "Palace of Illusions." Have you read this one? It's not about practice, but is based on a portion of the Ramayana. I love te literature of yoga, so the books I love are more along those lines. Will send more info later, if you like. Glad I found you folks!
