Book #1 options

We are really excited because it seems like some serious interest in joining us on this reading/learning journey. So here's what we're thinking: let's give it a week or so to decide upon book #1. We've had several book suggestions. Let's get some feedback then next Saturday we can announce our first book and go from there. Sound good? If you have alternative book suggestions please post them in the comments (you can do so anonymously if you wish).

Initial suggestions:

Yoga Sutras:

(if we chose this we could do it in sections as an addition to another book or alone. we'd need to pick a version, so: different versions, which do you like best?....)

  3. i don't know how much my vote counts, but i am all for "Yoga Mala" by Pattabhi Jois. as far as the sutras go, i'm all for whoever makes it easiest. :)

  4. J.e.n. I like the idea of "Yoga Mala" b/c it seems appropriate after his passing and b/c he was a father of the Western yoga movement. Originally I thought we should pick a "school-neutral" book to start with, but think maybe this would be a great one.

I am currently reading the sutras by Roach and McNally b/c that's what they had at my local store. I'd recommend it b/c it's an easy read (relatively)... uses lots of colloquialisms and modern day terms. A nice start/intro to the sutras. Also, all proceeds go to an organization that preserves/studies the sutras. like that too.

Looking forward to seeing what others say.

  6. "Heart of Yoga" includes the Sutras as one of the last sections and cites them throughout, so perhaps the club could consider starting there and then reading the rest? I've just completed a read, but it's on my recommended list and there's always more to learn.

  7. I would love to do "Heart of Yoga". One of my first yoga books, but it's been 10+ years since I've read it. As an added bonus, it's on the one bookshelf that hasn't been packed and put into storage.
